Summize, established in 2018, is a Manchester-based company specializing in Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) software. Their platform integrates seamlessly with tools like Microsoft Word, Outlook, Teams, Slack, and Salesforce, enabling users to manage contracts within familiar environments. Leveraging AI, Summize offers features such as instant contract summaries, AI-powered redlining, and automated workflows, streamlining the entire contract process from creation to storage.

As the lead UX designer for Summize, we played a critical role in shaping the user experience during the platform’s growth stages, building a solution that would scale with the needs of its users. Summize works with hundreds of global companies, and through our work, we discovered that many organisations struggle to adopt Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) platforms due to the complex change management and training required. Our goal was to design a platform that simplified these processes and created a seamless experience for all users.

One of the key features we implemented was the digital transformation of contract management. Over recent years, industries like sales, marketing, HR, finance, and recruitment have rapidly embraced digital tools, and it was time for legal teams to experience the same. By automating repetitive manual tasks, Summize empowered legal professionals to focus on high-value tasks instead.

We designed the platform to integrate with popular productivity tools such as Office365, Microsoft Teams, and Slack, enabling business colleagues to navigate contract processes easily, without needing to understand legal jargon.

This “decentralised CLM” approach made the system more intuitive, putting the end-user first and reducing the friction often experienced in traditional CLM platforms.

Throughout the project, we maintained a human-centric design philosophy, ensuring that the technology supported legal teams rather than replacing them. With AI underpinnings, Summize’s platform intelligently guided users through the contract management process, transforming how businesses interact with contracts at every touchpoint.

My responsibility was to ensure the platform’s ease of use while balancing the needs of both legal professionals and non-legal business colleagues. We led the development of workflows and interactions that enabled Summize’s users to manage contracts effortlessly, whether reviewing, negotiating, or finalising them. The result was a solution that seamlessly embedded into existing business tools, creating an experience that felt natural and accessible to all stakeholders involved in the contract process.
